I found this article one of the most interesting articles I have read while doing my research. It is a case-study on HIV-infected individuals and how the social stigma can lead to PTSD. In one of my earlier sources, we can see the social stigma is the root of structural stigma and personal stigma that affects millions of people around the world. Stigma causes either self-imposed or forced isolation that can cause triggers in some individuals. Those triggers and feelings of shame are some of the symptoms of traumatic stress. This article focuses on the United States and a few countries in Africa that have seen a huge rise in post-traumatic stress since the beginning HIV/AIDS epidemic. The epidemic is largely believed to be over, but there are still hundreds of millions of people who are affected with HIV, and as we know, it is a condition that has no cure. It Is so important to understand that many illnesses, especially with immense social stigma, can cause a plethora of other illnesses and PTSD is a very common side-effect.
